We Need a Better Way on Health Care

This week we learned that health care premiums under Obamacare will once again skyrocket. West Virginia families may see prices rise as much as 32%. This is simply unacceptable. The American people deserve access to health care coverage that is more affordable and high in quality.

Fortunately, the House has been promoting a “Better Way” agenda that will bring competition to the marketplace and reforms to our health care industry. And this week, we had an opportunity to visit Preston Memorial Hospital and hold a roundtable with health care professionals to review these important reforms. The group had a very meaningful discussion and I look forward to bringing the thoughts and ideas we exchanged back to Congress.

Promoting a National Energy Policy

We also had the opportunity to speak to the Consumer Energy Alliance in Wheeling and the TransTech Energy Business Development Conference at WVU in Morgantown to promote a new approach to energy issues. America needs a national energy policy - one that transcends partisan politics and includes all energy sources.

We should incentivize the development of a 21st Century energy infrastructure, increase funding for fossil energy research, and commercialize the work of our laboratories.Taking these important steps will help create jobs, and strengthen America’s energy security. Building an International Energy Partnership

On Thursday, we participated in a signing ceremony between officials from WVU and a delegation from China Shenhua Energy Company. They agreed to create a partnership focused on the development of clean energy technologies.

Last fall I visited and met with Shenhua’s Chairman and President to see their operations. Our mission has been to diversify the economy through research so we can grow the number of good paying jobs here in West Virginia. The signing of this agreement is a welcome development because the partnership between Shenhua and West Virginia University will help achieve that goal.

Revitalizing our Historic Downtowns

On Wednesday we visited West Virginia Independence Hall in Wheeling to speak to an audience about the importance of historic preservation tax credits. While in the private sector, I saw how these incentives can strengthen our local heritage and keep our history alive.

These tax credits are a way to revitalize our communities and create jobs. To read more on this subject, click here
