Making Progress on Coal Miners Pensions Bill

On Wednesday the Senate Finance Committee passed the Senate companion bill to The Coal Mine Healthcare and Pension Protection Act, legislation that I’ve sponsored and introduced in the House. Our bill would prevent over 120,000 miners from losing their pensions and health benefits.

We have been working on this bill for over four years in the House and it’s encouraging to finally see the Senate moving forward on this issue. Our miners have helped power this nation for many decades. They shouldn’t have to worry about losing their pensions and health benefits.

Let’s continue the momentum and get this legislation signed into law so our coal miners have the peace of mind that they will continue to receive the pensions and benefits they’ve earned.

Action on the House Floor

It was a busy week in the House. On Wednesday we passed the REVIEW Act. This legislation would ensure “high impact” regulations like the Clean Power Plan(CPP)get full scrutiny by the courts before being implemented.

The House also passed a bill that prohibits new cash payments to Iran. The President ignored longstanding policy not to pay ransom in exchange for American hostages when the Administration gave the regime in Tehran over $400 million. This kind of ransom payment to the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism is unacceptable and we in the House have made it clear that is should never happen again.

Promoting Energy Efficiency

It was a privilege to join Congressman Paul Tonko(NY-20)at a forum hosted by the Association of Energy Engineers to discuss the importance of a national energy policy, the progress of a comprehensive energy bill, and the need to invest in efficiency technology.

This week, the Energy and Power Subcommittee held a hearing to review fuel economy mandates and greenhouse gas emission standards for motor vehicles.   It is imperative that we do not impose more regulations on the automobile industry if they are going to sacrifice the safety of our motor vehicles and unnecessarily drive up prices for low and middle-income families.
