Boosting Research and Strengthening our Economy

As our economy continues to sputter along, it is absolutely necessary to find new ways to create opportunities and bring new jobs to West Virginia. This week, we convened a meeting with leaders from eight colleges and universities from the Upper Ohio Valley area as well representatives from the National Institutes of Health(NIH)to discuss ways to partner together and increase research funds to these academic institutions. We were pleased to be joined by Senator Shelley Moore Capito, as well as staffers representing Senator Rob Portman(OH)and Congressman Bill Johnson(OH-6).

We had a great discussion and we are all looking forward to working together to address some of the most pressing issues in our area.

Listening to the People

This week we had several opportunities to meet with constituents and listen to their concerns. We held roundtables with elected officials, business leaders, concerned citizens, and volunteer firefighters.  We discussed a range of topics that included jobs and the economy, local infrastructure projects, and the new House Republican agenda titled, “A Better Way.” To learn more about this plan and the policy solutions we are offering in the House of Representatives, click here

We also discussed opioid abuse and drug addiction which has not only been a big problem in West Virginia, but all across the country. Last week, I was pleased to see the President sign legislation that will help combat America’s struggle with drugs. This is a perfect example of what can be accomplished when the parties come together in pursuit of a common goal.

Hearing directly from my fellow West Virginians has always been one of the best parts of my job and I look forward to meeting with more constituents as the summer continues.

Meeting with Moundsville Mayor Saunders and City Manager Hess

On Thursday we had an opportunity to travel to Moundsville and meet with Mayor Saunders and City Manager Hess. It is clear that both of these officials care deeply about the people they serve. We had a great discussion about jobs, the coal industry, and other issues impacting the local community. It is always great to visit Moundsville and we are looking forward to returning again sometime soon.

Serbian Picnic Festival

Last Sunday we traveled up to Weirton for the Serbian Picnic Festival. It was so great to see some friends and enjoy the food and music. West Virginia is home to many wonderful festivals and this one is certainly one of the best. Hope to see you there next year!

ICYMI: McKinley in the News

We recently had an opportunity to stop by the Exponent-Telegram in Clarksburg and provide an update about what we are working on in Congress and how we can find a better way to create opportunities for more people. Please read about my visit here

Have a great weekend!
