Over the past two weeks, America has witnessed something impressive. Both parties came together to take action on one of the more challenging issues of our time: the opioid epidemic. This bill authorizes critical funding for the National Institutes of Health to develop alternatives to opioids for pain management, increases our treatment and prevention programs, and equips our law enforcement to stop dangerous drugs, like Fentanyl, from coming into America.
This bill will make a difference in the lives of millions of families across the country. Congress is building on the work it started when it passed CARA and 21st Century Cures, but this isn’t the end. It’s vital to continue working together to end the scourge of the opioid epidemic.
The 2018 Farm Bill takes critical steps to reform America’s food stamp program by putting in place fair, compassionate work requirements, reversing Obama loopholes. closing the skills gap by providing robust workforce training, and encouraging more people to move from welfare to work. This is accomplished without making any cuts and it protects the benefits for the 320,000 people in West Virginia who receive food from the program. With over six million vacant jobs, this will enable more people to benefit from the economic resurgence that’s currently underway.
Agriculture is essential to West Virginia and is a key part of our economy. Farmers bring in nearly $5 billion for our state every year. This legislation supports our farmers and spurs development in rural parts of our state by expanding broadband access and extending healthcare coverage through agricultural plans.
President Trump Expands Access to Affordable Health Insurance for Small Businesses
We welcome this action from President Trump to expand the availability of association health plans. This will increase access to affordable health insurance for small businesses and those who are self-employed. This decision will increase competition and allow these groups to join together and purchase insurance across state lines.
Six Months Into New Tax Law, Manufacturing Confidence is Through the Roof
In addition to substantially increased confidence, projected employment growth and capital spending are at record levels. Manufacturers also project wage growth to rise at its fastest pace in 17 years.
Wednesday was West Virginia's 155th birthday! Almost Heaven and the home we love. Think about the courage and conviction our leaders demonstrated 155 years ago in breaking from Virginia. Our state still has that strength and optimism. Let’s keep moving forward.
