Happy Independence Day!
Thursday, we celebrate the 243rd birthday of America! On this day in 1776, the greatest generation of political thinkers came together from diverse backgrounds and ideologies to declare “that these united colonies are, and of right ought to be free and independent states.” Never before has a nation been created based on a common belief in the rights and sovereignty of the people. Let us reflect today on our blessings of liberty here in the United States of America.

Mary and I spent the Fourth of July with some of our fellow West Virginians and marched in the Fairview Parade! I hope you all had a safe and fun holiday!

Honoring WV Native Katherine Johnson

With the recent re-dedication of its Fairmont facility, NASA is teaching young West Virginians that the sky is not the limit.

NASA’s Independent Verification & Validation Facility was renamed Tuesday to honor the career of Greenbrier County native Katherine Johnson. Johnson, born in White Sulphur Springs in 1918, is a renowned NASA mathematician, most well-known for her involvement in the orbital missions of Alan Shepard and John Glenn

Katherine Johnson helped develop equations that put a man on the moon. She is an outstanding West Virginian and we are honored to join her family in recognizing her contributions to NASA. Katherine Johnson is a trailblazer and it’s about time she got the recognition she deserves.

Visiting Ritchie County
It was great having a chance to speak with some Ritchie County residents about their concerns regarding advancing tourism, roads, infrastructure, housing, education concerns, volunteering, and VFD participation. I also had the chance to do a walking tour of the town of Cairo and met with local business owners. Small business owners are the backbone of this nation, and I will continue to use my role in Congress to help them.

Hearing from our Veterans
This week, I had the chance to talk with Veterans at the American Legion in Shinnston. Lot's of engaging discussion on increasing access to healthcare for veterans living in rural areas, providing support for those suffering from PTSD, and the GI Bill STEM Extension Act, legislation put forward by our office that increases access to STEM careers for veterans.
