Addressing the Worsening Opioid Epidemic

On Thursday, we joined Sam Baker for a discussion on the opioid epidemic in America. We discussed the future of pain management including policy changes, investment in new research, and expanded access to non-opioid choices. America’s largest drug companies distributed 76 billion oxycodone and hydrocodone pain pills across the country between 2006 and 2012 as the nation’s deadliest drug epidemic spun out of control. When you have 203 pills per person in Mingo, WV, they had to have known that was an excessive amount.

Engaging With Our Constituents

We enjoyed hosting a telephone town hall this week with thousands of our constituents. The discussion included wide array of issues important to West Virginia such as the opioid epidemic, raising the federal minimum wage, and congressional term limits. The Founding Fathers envisioned the House to be the direct representatives of the people, and we always enjoy engaging with our constituents to fulfill their vision. Please do not hesitate to contact me in the future with any of your questions, concerns or opinions. Regarding issues before Congress, please contact my Washington, D.C. office by phone at (202) 225-4172; for constituent services, my Morgantown office at (304) 284-8506.  I also encourage you to visit my website at www.mckinley.house.gov, where you can send me an email.

Working to Reduce Unwanted Robocalls

Like our constituents, we are sick and tired of getting unwanted robocalls. According to a third-party report last year, spam calls will make up almost half of all calls received by the average American in 2019.  This is an unprecedented and unacceptable level of unwelcome calls from scammers who are typically attempting to obtain personal or financial information. This week, the Energy and Commerce Committee passed a bill to stop illegal robocalls with bipartisan support! We urge House leadership to move this bill to the floor for a final vote.

Promoting Domestic Production of Rare Earth Materials

We need to ensure that the materials we buy for our military and electronic equipment give us the biggest bang for our buck. I’m happy to have sponsored three amendments that passed in the NDAA that will help the United States develop a domestic supply of rare earth elements.  Due to continued unfair trade practices from nations like China, it has become increasingly difficult to purchase Rare Earths materials, which contribute to our tanks, planes, and electronics.
