ICYMI: McKinley Speaks at Axios Event on the Opioid Epidemic
WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Representative David McKinley (R-W.Va.) joined Axios Health Care Editor Sam Baker at Axios' "Future of Pain Management" event to talk about the opioid epidemic and the future of pain management including policy changes, investment in new research, and expanded access to non-opioid choices.
“I think everyone has to understand, 215 people died yesterday from substance abuse, 215 people will died today, and 215 people are going to die tomorrow. In my state of West Virginia, we have one person dying every eight hours from drugs,” McKinley said. “After seven months of no hearings on opioids, it looks like we're going to get started again. We’ve lost some momentum from last Congress- think about it, during the last Congress- we had H.R. 6; we had CARA, 21st Century Cures; we had multiple hearings on the crisis and then this Congress we went silent for seven months. I hope that the hearing earlier this week is the start of a series of hearings on the opioid crisis.”
