WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative David McKinley P.E. (R-W.Va.) issued the following statement on President Trump’s State of the Union address tonight:

“In the first two years of Donald Trump’s presidency, West Virginia has seen its economy grow and celebrated the end of the war on fossil fuels. Tonight, President Trump encouraged Members of Congress to put our nation first and reminded us that the only victory that matters is one that helps the American people.

“In his State of the Union address the President spoke about the role working together and compromise will play in breaking decades of political stalemate in Washington. I truly believe the President used his speech to try and unite Congress and remind us that we are here to serve the American people. We must return our focus to helping the American people rather than scoring political points. Our citizens deserve a Congress that will work together to push legislation that will help them. This includes the priorities the President laid out in his speech, including lowering the costs of healthcare and investing in infrastructure.

“We have seen firsthand that the high costs of prescriptions and healthcare require many Americans to make difficult financial decisions for themselves and their families. That is why I have worked across the aisle to introduce legislation to help provide patients with access to lifesaving medications and care at affordable prices. I look forward to continuing to work with both parties and the President to help Americans receive the care they need, while also keeping money in their pockets.

“Finally, the President addressed the challenges facing our nation through unchecked illegal immigration. We are a nation of laws, and I will continue to support the funding needed to secure our borders and protect Americans.”
