Washington, D.C. – Congressman David B. McKinley, P.E., (WV-1) voted to help Americans who struggle with a mental health illness by increasing access to medical professionals and making existing programs more effective.

McKinley, P.E., (WV-1) voted to help Americans who struggle with a mental health illness by increasing access to medical professionals and making existing programs more effective. “From my discussions with health professionals, educators, and law enforcements officials in West Virginia, it is always made clear that our mental health system is broken. Right now, too many people are falling through the cracks and not receiving the proper medical treatment and that has to change,” said McKinley. “People who suffer from a mental health illness deserve access to the highest quality care available and this legislation is a step towards achieving that goal,” McKinley said. Background on The Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act The Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act, H.R. 2646 was introduced by Congressman Tim Murphy (R-PA) and it passed with overwhelming bi-partisan support. Congressman McKinley was a co-sponsor of this legislation. Specifically, this bill increases funds for research, provides alternatives to institutionalization, mandates oversight to prevent federal tax dollars from being wasted, and makes it easier for patients in rural communities to access treatment from mental health professionals. |
