During the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s hearing into Facebook’s recent security and privacy issues, Congressman David B. McKinley, P.E., (WV-1) questioned Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, on illegal online pharmacies using the social media site to sell illegal opioid pills. This questioning comes one week after Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Scott Gottlieb called on social media companies to crack down on illegal opioid sales.

“Illegal online pharmacies are using Facebook to circumvent the law, and allow people to buy highly addictive drugs without a prescription. This is directly aiding in the destruction of so many lives. This issue hits home for West Virginia, where we have the highest rate of opioid deaths in the nation,” said McKinley.

“Currently, Facebook is enabling illegal activity and, in so doing, hurting people. At the beginning of his testimony, Mr. Zuckerberg said that he is responsible for the content on his site, which is why we’re calling on him to take down these advertisements and take steps to prevent them in the future,” McKinley added.
