WV MetroNews: McKinley shepherds Brownfields legislation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – West Virginia First District Congressman David McKinley says a key piece of legislation is moving in the right direction.

West Virginia First District Congressman David McKinley says a key piece of legislation is moving in the right direction.

Members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee came together last week and passed a bill that proposes some amendments to the Brownfields program.

If approved, the proposed changes would expand the Brownfields program, which provides grants and technical assistance to communities, states, and more to safely assess, clean up, and sustainably reuse contaminated properties.

“Nationally there are 450,000 sites that are contaminated around the country,” McKinley said. “The funding level and the way we are doing things right now we are only improving 1,000 of those annually. Just do the math and you can see we are never going to get these sites fixed up.”

“One of the things we are trying to do is increase the grant at level,” McKinley said. “Right now you can only get 200,000 dollars for a Brownfields site, we are increasing that to 500,000. Another thing is that non-profits would be able to apply for a grant at Brownfields sites so they could make the improvements with it.”
