McKinley, P.E., (WV-1) this week convened a meeting of the Ohio Valley Higher Education Consortium (OVHEC) to file a modified request for an opioid research grant with National Science Foundation. OVHEC is a group of eight higher education institutions in the Northern Panhandle, which are partnering to pursue research funding for the critical issues affecting the valley. McKinley, P.E., (WV-1) and a small group of Members of Congress participated in a working lunch on combating the opioid crisis with President Donald J. Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and other senior Trump Administration officials. "Drug addiction and opioid abuse is a national crisis that has touched all of our lives," said McKinley. "Too many people in West Virginia and around the country have seen their loved ones fall into a downward spiral of addiction, robbing them of their God-given potential. We need to step up our fight against this epidemic." "We've had dozens of meetings over the last few years with stakeholders from teachers to doctors to law enforcement to discuss strategies to combat opioid abuse," said McKinley. "Today's meeting was a good opportunity to share recommendations we've developed from these meetings. One suggestion we offered was to have the Surgeon General play a more vocal role in educating the public." "President Trump has made it very clear that he is committed to tackling this problem head on. I look forward to working with him to push back against the scourge of drug addiction," said McKinley. BackgroundYesterday, the White House announced a new initiative to combat the drug epidemic, announcing the President's Commission on Combating the Drug Epidemic and Opioid Abuse. The Commission will be led by Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey. Read more here. Congressman McKinley has been a leader in the House in the battle against drug addiction. In 2016, groundbreaking legislation on opioids was signed into law. The legislation included a series of bills which passed the Energy and Commerce Committee and several amendments offered by McKinley.
